Alex G. Spanos Elementary School is a significant project not only for Stockton Unified but also the City of Stockton. This project, in conjunction with other surrounding city park and housing projects, is a catalyst for redeveloping and changing the Gleason Park area. A neighborhood once in decay is being transformed into a model community with housing, educational facilities, parks and working environments all interconnected and within walking distance. The planning of this facility embodied the coordinated efforts of the School District, the City of Stockton’s Redevelopment Agency, the State Office of Historical Preservation, and adjacent housing projects. All entities came together to plan a model, walk-able community. This exciting Elementary School creates a built environment that helps establish a creative and exciting atmosphere for teaching and student learning.
