The College of the Sequoias’ Hanford Public Safety Building was developed to serve the need within the community and Tulare/Kings Counties at large, for a job-ready public safety workforce. Meetings with COS and the local Police and Fire Academies were critical to identify and address the special needs of their programs from the inception of the project. This energy efficient project exceeds the California requirements. Building components are pushed to the perimeter of the site to create a large internal court. This outdoor area serves as a Drill Yard or Assembly Lawn. It accommodates many training activities and programmatic functions, in addition to providing a gathering place for students, cadets, faculty and visitors. The Hanford Public Safety Building brings an image of modernity to the rural landscape. The design presents an institutional atmosphere in keeping with the site’s Community College Educational Program.
