Merced College Agriculture and Industrial Technology Complex

Merced Community College District

The Ag and Industrial Technology Complex supports a broad range of CTE programs which include Plant and Animal Science, Ag Business, Computing Tech, Industrial Tech, HVACT Tech, Electronics and Landscaping. The Complex is 34,522 SF on 2.22 Acres. In addition to instructor offices and meeting/conference space there are several specialized teaching and training spaces.

It was important that the building fit with the existing architectural vernacular and at the same time, being that this is the first new construction project at the college in over a decade, we felt the design should “look forward” towards influencing future Architectural possibilities at Merced College.

At the southeast corner of the building a silo rises as a beacon symbolizing agriculture. The silo serves as both an anchor and a transitional element between the southern and eastern elevations. Inside the silo is a large conference room featuring a striking light feature and Kalwall above for natural light. Simple forms and gabled roofs are varied to reflect the different programs within and to make the facility look like a “complex” and not just a single mono-programmatic building. This variation of forms on the exterior will also translate to the feeling of “walking down a city street” with different storefronts and materials along the way. This is especially evident within the central courtyard.

To express the Agriculture and Industrial technology program through design, the exterior of the building is largely standing seam metal panel that wraps the volumes and concrete block. Glazing is used at key locations to provide natural light to lab spaces. The painting of the building includes some of the campus colors to fit within the context yet also brings in a cooler grey and metal paneling for a more modern look. The materials chosen for the project are long-lasting and present a modern industrial style. In several locations a resinous flooring with drains eliminates potential slipping. Other interior materials include reclaimed wood at the building reception, polished concrete, and corrugated metal panel.
